"China's nuclear energy ambition after Fukushima Daiichi"

By : Shaofeng Chen
Paris 25th of November 2011

"Shaofeng Chen from Peking, who will discuss how surging demand for energy resources derived from its fast growing economy has driven China to resort to nuclear energy. The Chinese government even initiated a goal of more than doubling the current 2020 target of 40 GW. The eruption of the recent Fukushima Daiichi crisis, however, has prompted the government to sincerely reflect upon its policy of endorsing the high-speed development of nuclear energy. The State Council has temporarily halted approval of new nuclear plants pending a comprehensive safety review. Will China slow down or even relinquish its previous nuclear ambition? Or will it renew such a nuclear energy development momentum? What are the challenges confronting China in pushing for the expansion of nuclear energy?"
