Sustainable Transport and Energy Reduction: Can the Challenge be met?
By David Banister
56 rue des Saints-Pères
75007 Paris 22nd of September 2009

A session of the Seminar on sustainable development and environmental economics

Transport is in a very vulnerable position, as it is almost totally dependent on oil for its energy, and that oil is becoming increasingly scarce and expensive.  In addition, transport now produces over 25% of all CO2 emissions, and it is making no contribution to global reduction targets.

In this presentation, David Banister will examine the recent actions taken to address these problems at the EU and national levels, and places them in the context of the continuing growth in the demand for travel.
