Bien que les services fournis par les écosystèmes soient essentiels pour le bien-être de l'homme et de toute vie sur terre, ils se dégradent à un rythme alarmant : selon l'Evaluation des écosystèmes en début de millénaire (2005), près de deux tiers des services écosystémiques sont actuellement menacés. Par ailleurs, la biodiversité est de plus en plus reconnue comme élément fondamental pour soutenir la capacité des écosystèmes à fournir ces services.

Lors de cette session, Marianne Kettunen et Patrick ten Brink démontreront, à partir d'exemples au sein de l'Union Européenne, les impacts socio-économiques de la détérioration des services écosystémiques associées à la perte de la biodiversité. Leur étude souligne la nécessité de s'interroger sur la façon dont la biodiversité et ses services pourraient être mieux intégrés en amont des processus de prise de décisions et de formulation des politiques afin de minimiser leur perte.

Résumé

The value of ecosystem services (eg providing food and other resources, water purification, nutrient retention, erosion control, recreation and ecotourism etc.) is gaining increasing attention and in this context, the role of biodiversity as a fundamental part of ecosystem services is increasingly addressed. There are a considerable number of examples of the loss of ecosystem services due to and/or associated with the loss of biodiversity. On numerous occasions it has also been demonstrated that the loss of biodiversity related ecosystem services can lead to socioeconomic and financial costs, including financial losses. In several cases the loss of biodiversity and associated services could have been avoided or minimised by considering the full implications of decisions on ecosystem services.

Thus, it could be argued that improving the integration of biodiversity and ecosystem services related aspects into decision making process would allow more sustainable development initiatives and management practises to take place, contributing to halting the loss of biodiversity in the EU. The aim of presentation by Kettunen and ten Brink is to provide insights on the socio-economic impacts of the loss of biodiversity related ecosystem services. The presentation also introduces possibilities and ideas, including concrete tools and methodologies, for including biodiversity related aspects as an integral part of policy and decision-making processes and their evaluation. Finally, the speakers also aim to summarise the future steps needed to improve biodiversity and ecosystem services valuation.
