Alexandre Magnan is developping research on vulnerability and (mal)adaptation to climate and environmental change. He's working on coastal areas and small islands especially in the Indian Ocean (e.g., Reunion Island, Maldives, Mauritius) and in the Pacific (Kiribati, French Polynesia). He is particularly interested in "trajectories of vulnerability" (characterization of influencing factors and their interactions over time), in the risk of maladaptation (typology, evaluation, case study) and in the implementation of a Global adaptation goal within the international climate negotiations.

Alexandre holds a doctorate from the University of Montpellier 3 in Geography (2005).
He joined IDDRI in october 2007.

Alexandre is also Associate Research Fellow at LIENSs laboratory (Littoral, Environnement & Societies), University of la Rochelle & CNRS (UMR 7266), France. He's also member of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - Working Group 2 "Impact, Vulnerability, Adaptation", Special Report on Oceans and Cryosphere).

Projects: (co-coord.):

Alexandre Magnan has published several books:
  • Ces îles qui pourraient disparaître,
  • Des catastrophes... "naturelles" ?
  • Changement climatique : tous vulnérables ?

as well as scientific papers (Science, Nature Climate Change, WIREs Climate Change...).
