Monica Frassoni is an Italian politician and currently serves as Chairwoman of the European Green Party since October 2009. Formerly, she was elected as a Member of the European Parliament (1999-2009) and co-chaired with Daniel Cohn-Bendit, the European Greens – European Free Alliance Group in the European Parliament. During her first term, she was a member of the Constitutional Affairs Committee and of the EU-South America Relations and Mercosur Interparliamentary Delegation. She was also a substitute member of the Committee for Citizens’ Freedoms and Rights, Justice and Home Affairs and of the delegation to the EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee. In 1999, she was nominated to the steering committee for the constituency phase of the Italian Greens, before becoming a member of the Executive Committee of the Green Party in Italy (Federazione dei Verdi). In the European elections of June 2004, she was re-elected to the EP with the Italian Greens and served as a member of the Committee on Legal Affairs and of the Delegation for relations with Mercosur. She was also a substitute member of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, of the delegation for relations with Iran and of the delegation to the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly. Previously in her career, she served ten years as an advisor on institutional issues, internal rules and immunity of the Greens Group in the European Parliament and formerly as Secretary General of the Young European Federalists. She is also a member of the board of the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank (PNoWB) and was head of the EU’s electoral observation missions to Bolivia and Venezuela in 2006.
