Developing new methodologies to assess the sustainability impacts of trade policies
Existing works on the Sustainable Impact Assessment of trade liberalisation (SIA) show that the necessary conditions for trade liberalisation to provide sustainable and shared gains are not always met in reality, and need more work to help the decision maker in trade negotiations. When assessing the consequences on sustainable development of changes in economic policy in the direction of liberalization, the SIAMETHOD project aims at taking a significant number of trade negotiations? conflicting issues, developing appropriate methodological tools to help negotiators exchange their arguments in a common framework, overcome conflicting issues wherever possible, discard sticking issues in the negotiation process and identify flanking measures for the mitigation of the likely negative impacts at stake.
