Emma Wilson
Senior Researcher

Emma Wilson, PhD. is a senior researcher at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) in London. She has a particular focus on energy and the extractive industries; community development; and company-community relations. Since joining IIED in 2006, Emma has worked on projects related to management of oil and gas contracting chains (Russian Arctic); building civil society capacity to respond to oil and gas developments (Ghana, Kazakhstan); the role of oil and gas companies in facilitating ‘access to energy’ locally (Nigeria); business and conflict resolution; and models for decentralised, community-based energy service delivery. Prior to joining IIED, Emma worked as an environmental activist, PhD researcher and consultant to Shell on Sakhalin Island in the Russian Far East. Emma completed her PhD (2002) at the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge University, on the theme of local involvement in decision-making relating to natural resource management (Sakhalin Island case study). Emma has also worked as a consultant to Shell in Qatar, and with conservation organisations in Russia and other Former Soviet Union countries.
