Julien Rochette moderated this session of the Virtual Ocean Dialogues: an interactive global online event, covering key ocean topics from protection and pollution to data and blue economy, from 1-5 June 2020. Organised by the World Economic Forum and Friends of Ocean Action.

In September 2018, formal negotiations commenced at the United Nations to develop a new treaty under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. The new treaty will establish a global framework to conserve and manage biodiversity of the high seas, which constitute almost two-thirds of the global ocean, cover nearly half of the planet and are a global common.

In this session, ocean stakeholders with representation from government, science and ocean-users discussed how the potential treaty can address current gaps in high seas governance, and what is needed to bring it across the finish line.
