Objectives and Mission
The Paris Agreement adopted at COP21 defines the global objective to stabilize the global temperature increase to “well below” 2C compared to pre-industrial levels and defines the collective climate ambition of reaching net zero emission in the second half of this century. In this framework, each country is responsible for defining its own emission targets and the implementation measures adopted to reach them. To support this process, the Paris Agreement introduces two instruments. On the one hand, Article 4.19 of the PA invites Parties to elaborate “long-term low emission development strategies [… ] in the light of different national circumstances”. The LT-LEDS is an instrument to investigate the challenges, opportunities and enabling conditions for achieving simultaneously deep emission reductions consistent with the global goals and key socio-economic priorities as defined by each country. On the other hand, Article 14 of the PA defines a process of global stocktaking on the collective ambition emerging as a composite from country targets and actions. This bottom-up international perspective seeks to reconcile the critical role of structured collective discussions to advance on priorities of international cooperation to support the progressive increase of collective ambition and the importance to organize these collective discussions around the requirements for country transitions as assessed by individual countries.
The objective of this position is to work at this interface between country perspectives on their long-term low emission development strategies and related international conversations.
Under the supervision of the Deep Decarbonization Pathways initiative Lead, the researcher will, among other:
- Second the Lead in the coordination of an EU-funded 3-year, multi-partner project including research institutions from major emerging economies as well as international teams on “Modelling of greenhouse-gas emissions relevant to the Paris Agreement (informing successive NDCs in light of the Global Stocktake)”. This entails the project management both at the administrative level in close collaboration with a project manager, and the technical level notably the responsibility for timely and high-quality deliverables), as well as the responsibility of a specific work package requiring scientific coordination of all project partners towards the definition of global narratives.
- Be the IDDRI focal point in a 3-year H2020 project about “Assessing Sectoral Perspectives on Climate Transitions to Support the Global Stocktake and Subsequent NDCs” with a specific contribution on the organization of international sectoral conversations in close collaboration with the team’s researchers on transport, industry and AFOLU.
- Contribute to track-2 dialogue processes between EU and external partners, in particular in an on-going process between EU and India for which IDDRI coordinates EU think tanks’ contributions. This involves working in close collaboration with IDDRI’s Climate program, coordinating inputs from the DDP to background notes in advance of the dialogues and ‘aide-memoire’ summarizing main insights from the discussions.
More generally, she or he will;
- Join a dynamic team of researchers

- Coordinate activities with multiple country research partners
- Contribute to the development of analytical methods for in-depth assessment of global deep decarbonisation emerging as a composite of country visions
- Organize international conversation with sectoral experts
- Steer bloc-bloc dialogue processes
- Develop a research activity, publishing and promoting policy-relevant and scientific publications and organize events supporting the impact strategy of IDDRI at the international scale;
- Develop and maintain relevant networks and partnerships of researchers and with other stakeholders from policymaking, research, business, civil society ;
- Represent IDDRI in relevant stakeholder meetings, conferences, as well as with the media
- Contribute to the definition of the research program and strategy for change;
- Participate in fundraising for research activities.
Required Qualifications and Contract
The successful candidate should:
- Hold a PhD or master’s level qualification in the economics of climate change and/or energy and/or development, with skills and experience related to the methods for analytical and quantitative analysis of climate policies and scenarios. Prior experience in developing and using environment - energy - economics analytical tools would be an asset;
- Have at least 5 years of professional experience in academia, private sector, or government/policy institution with strong personal understanding and knowledge of sustainable development, energy and climate change issues;
- Have experience of coordinating multi-year, multi-partner projects;
- Have experience of international sectoral conversations
- Have experience of domestic climate policy processes, with a preference for an understanding of policy making in different national contexts.
- Be fluent in English and French. Fluency in other UN languages would be an asset;
- Have the capacity to work independently as well as in team, in an international, multicultural environment;
- Have the willingness to travel internationally, up to around three weeks a year

- Excellent writing and communication skills, both in French and English including the ability to synthesize and present technical analysis for a non-technical audience;

A 36-month fixed term contract (CDD-OD in French).
Yearly remuneration: 40k€ with a 10% end-of-contract “bonus” in line with French labour law on short term contracts.
