REPLAY
The COP16 of the Convention on Biological Diversity was held in Cali (Colombia) from 21 October to 1 November 2024. This was a key stage in the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). This pivotal agreement for the international governance of biodiversity, particularly because of the ambition of its objectives and targets aimed at halting and reversing the loss of biodiversity, has been faced with numerous challenges and political trade-offs since its adoption in December 2022.
Action planning, financing, accountability of States for the commitments made at COP 15, transformation of economies, links with the climate agenda... In this blog post, IDDRI has identified the priorities to ensure that this event is a real driving force behind the implementation of the global framework.
Did COP16 live up to these challenges? Did it help to strengthen the international momentum?
On 5 November 2024, Agnès Hallosserie, Director of IDDRI's Biodiversity Programme, and Juliette Landry, Senior Research Fellow on International Biodiversity Governance, took stock of this 16th Conference of the Parties on biodiversity.
