Presentation

In this Note, the agency Étonnamment Si and IDDRI provide insights into the following issues and questions: What do we mean when we talk about narratives? Why is it relevant to explore the links between narratives and social contracts? To which narrative can each pact of the social contract be linked? How do political narratives articulate these different narratives and, where applicable, produce a certain idea of the social contract? What reality do they create and what transactions do they legitimize? Conversely, how are these narratives received and interpreted by individuals? And finally, how can they be changed?

Extract

Moving towards new narratives requires both empirical evidence and scientific knowledge, as well as quantitative and qualitative surveys. This is how we want to understand how different combinations of narrative elements relating to the four pillars of the social contract (Democracy, Work, Consumption and Security) and the ecological transition can influence citizens. This will enable us to sketch out socio-ecological narratives and discuss them with a wide range of actors keen to initiate the environmental transition, while addressing the shortcomings of our social contract.
