This international seminar organised by IDDRI and AFD aims to take stock and assess the implications of the ABS Protocol for the governance of biodiversity as well as its implementation challenges and potential contributions to the global sustainable development agenda. The focus will be on legal, policy and practical implementation challenges with the objective to contribute to the debate on outstanding issues, future research directions and technical assistance and training activities related to the implementation of the ABS Protocol.

Programme :

1) First session: The ABC of ABS
This session will provide an introductory overview of the Nagoya Protocol’s ABS system with a focus on the balance between provisions on Access to genetic resources and traditional knowledge, Benefit sharing and Compliance.

2) Second session: Temporal scope, traditional knowledge, derivatives and disclosure
This session will consider key outstanding cross-cutting issues under the Nagoya Protocol with the view to providing a preliminary assessment of their implications for international equity and the global governance of biodiversity.

3) Third Session  – Necessary exemptions or potential loopholes under the ABS Protocol?
This session will analyse the Nagoya Protocol’s relationship with other international instruments, including ongoing work and practices under relevant international instruments and organizations, as well as the Protocol’s provisions on special considerations for non-commercial research, agriculture and emergency situations.
