Context and objectives
On the eve of COP 21, a group of countries supported by civil society organisations, including IDDRI, launched the "Because the Ocean" initiative to strengthen the integration of oceans in climate negotiations.
Bringing together around thirty states, this "friends of the ocean" group is pursuing the initiative, in particular to highlight the solutions that oceans can provide in the face of climate change.
When several years ago I was Secretary of State for the Environment in my home country, Spain, I was bemused to see the lack of exchange and communication between people working on ocean conservation and those working on climate resilience. Thanks to this declaration, I am glad to see that the silos separating the ocean and climate communities have started to disappea.
