Workshop Presentation

"Marine areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ), often referred as the 'high seas', represent around half of the planet’s surface area and a significant amount of its biodiversity.

Recently, the international community has paid increased attention to the growing threats to these areas and to their biodiversity. A global debate, led by the United Nations General Assembly, followed with a focus on gaps and remedies.

This seminar will present the state of play in the governance of marine biodiversity in ABNJ, highlight the major issues faced and present the current status of the international debate. It will also discuss how these aspects are relevant to the World Bank and the Global Environment Facility when supporting countries develop their blue economies."
