COP15 to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will be held in late 2020 in China (Kunming), and will see the adoption of a new global framework for post-2020 biodiversity governance. This negotiation process is underway and the agenda for discussions ahead of Kunming is already very full and complex.

To make it easier for French actors to follow these events and to improve their collective understanding of the issues, and if possible to facilitate their involvement in preparations for COP15, the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) and the Office Français de la Biodiversité (OFB - French Biodiversity Office) will be jointly organising regular meetings (approximately every three months) until late 2020, to provide an opportunity to analyse and appropriate international current events concerning biodiversity.

These regular meetings will bring together a broad range of French actors (government and agencies, local authorities, research, NGOs, companies, journalists, and political parties). This series of events and the actors taking part will form the “Biodiversity Platform 2020”.

The first edition was held on 27 June at Sciences Po, eand the second meeting was held at the OFB on 20 September 2019.

The third edition of the platform will take place at Sciences Po, on January 17, 2020, from 4 to 7 pm. The session will take stock of the first version of the negotiating text for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, will look more specifically at events affecting ocean governance during 2020, and will propose a cross-discussion of climate, biodiversity and oceans issues, and the possibility of building a common ambition on these subjects.
