Abstract

Against a backdrop of high food price inflation, the authors discuss the potential effects of policies targeting food demand to mitigate the impact of high and persistent food price inflation caused by the multiple crises (environmental, energy and geopolitical) affecting the international food system. They suggest that “part of the price rise could be mitigated by reducing food waste and gradually shifting towards healthier and more sustainable diets”. They argue, however, that such policies must anticipate the increased risk of inequalities in access to healthy and sustainable food, with income support for the most disadvantaged households being a key lever.
