Philipp Lepenies is an economist and political scientist. He is senior fellow at the IASS in Potsdam and heads the research group “Cultures of Economics – Cultures of Sustainability.” He holds the venia legendi (habilitation) from the Goethe University in Frankfurt (Germany), a doctorate in economics from the Free University of Berlin (Germany) and a Master degree in development studies from the London School of Economics (LSE, United Kingdom). Before re-entering academia, he spent more than ten years within the German Development Bank (KfW) in Frankfurt. He worked as a project manager in charge of development projects in Bolivia, El Salvador, Cambodia, China, Laos and Vietnam. Later, he was senior economist in the strategy department and focused on development policy issues such as poverty alleviation. Currently, he is visiting professor in economics at the Free University of Berlin (Germany).
