Sustainable development is intimately linked to good governance in a society. There are many facets to good governance. One of these, a decisive one, is the way “presidents”—here shorthand for public authorities—are selected. It is for instance obvious that the deficiencies that characterize the selection processes in the US and in China, albeit rather different from each other, significantly contribute to a lack of institutional efficiency and a lack of sustainability plaguing their respective development paths. We shall here examine theoretical and experimental results from social choice and rational selection approaches that constitute a solid basis for possible improvements.

Sur la base d’une connaissance approfondie d’un domaine auquel il a lui-même apporté des contributions majeures, Eric Maskin ouvre des perspectives pour réformer les mécanismes institutionnels par lesquels les gouvernants sont choisis dans une société, et par conséquent pour améliorer la gouvernance elle-même et infléchir la trajectoire de développement poursuivie.
